The Rainbow Connection

Our last night of the tour we played at Henfling's Tavern in Ben Lamond. It was a boot-scoot-and boogie kinda place, with bumber stickers in the window telling us to "Never Forget Ruben Salazar". I knew I would like the place. At first impression, these seemed like tougher folk, and not necessarily the kind of people you would expect to come up and shake your hand. Yet, everyone here was real friendly, and thanked us for playing.

We spent the night in a cabin umbrella'd under giant redwoods in a Santa Cruz rain jungle. These trees were huge, the biggest I've stood under for awhile, and the rain drops seemed just as big. It was a steady assault, land mines of wet maple leaves and water run-off on the muddy street, and a round robin up the hill to the main road, started out the morning commute. Mikey -btw- has done a phenomenal job driving the 'ole Mallard from city to city. And this was the ultimate test. Really lean into it on the corners, test the brakes for maximum deceleration. The drive on throughout the day was pretty wet and windy. The weather broke for a couple hours, and as we passed by the city of Los Banos*, hanging in front of all the angry clouds was a rainbow shining above the city. I couldn't help but smile, it seemed like such a great metaphor for life. I know because I've seen some rainbows rising up out of some different banos in my own life. One of which came rising up out of the RV after Astra and I opened up the holding tank that night, but that's a different story! I guess when you stop and take a look around, there's the beauty of restoration everywhere, in every day. I see it in art. In music. In friendship. And it gives me hope. And it makes me happy to have been a part of something that has lifted others up in such a wildly positive and restorative way - and to have done it with such a wailin' crew. Mikey's choice cooking and sheet metal rock (c'mon Mikey - I know you got something harder than Cannibal Corpse) kept my heart jumpin' and booty bumpin - Janay's drive-by humor and silliness kept my sides aching and helped sedate my fears of generator shut-downs and more police pullovers, Astra's poise and steady handling of our tour manifesto, kept our noses pointed forward as we sloughed out the 2,000 mile, three state, 11 show, 12-day trek. There's a lot of reflection after a journey like this one, and when looking back over these past twelve days one thing stands out, we all knew it would come to an end. But here we are. Still here, anyways. And that's the nature of endings, it seems, is that they never really end. The world sleeps and rises. But the beauty of this world, and the vision we lead ourselves by can go only so far as we believe in ourselves, and only so long as we keep proving, over and over again, that we can dream bigger and do better than our forefathers did - and in our case here, to rock harder than all the other bands on the bill.

Being on the open road with Astra, Mikey, and Janay has filled me with enough memories for at least the next ten years. And I want to say thank you to Astra for letting me rock the box with you on the road, Mikey for opening my ears and gut to new music and good food, and to Janay for setting up the merch table everyday. We never got the curtain call, but all y'all deserve a round of applause - or an apple pie, or something. Maybe applesauce for Janay.

*Oh, and no offense to anyone residing in Los Banos, CA. From a distance it seems like a very quaint place to live, and I see no reflection on the name to which it was given.

Cheerio!

Need 2 signs to make the point. Ha!

Good Things Come in Pink Boxes

Voodoo donuts in Portland equals famous and bizarre donuts that make your teeth hurt so good with every absurdly sugary bite. Donuts topped with fruit loops and cocoa puffs, bubble gum and purple sprinkles. My elementary school friend, Allison Leix, came out to the Portland show and brought us 2 dozen of them!!! Such a sweet thing to do, but OMG! We really tried our best to work on them a bit, but were pretty unsuccessful.

We contemplated what to do with them. We didn't want them to go to waste since they seemed to be such a hot commodity. We trusted the donuts would find their way in the world.

The venue in Seattle was in an "up and coming" neighborhood called Columbia City and their were plenty of questionable characters swarming around. As Janay and I were getting out of the RV, one of them came up, asked for cash and was peering in thru the door.....made me real nervous. I apologized for not having any dough and offered him one of the boxes of donuts. He seemed disappointed at first....I told him not to eat them all in one sitting and to share them with his friends. Can only imagine what he told his homies when he walked back over to them, but it was definitely followed by a burst of laughter.

The other box of donuts traveled with us to Newberg, OR. where we had a little RV party and Tim made sure to dig into them a bit, the result being a number of donuts with one big huge bite out of each of them. I woke up the next morning and there were donut remnants everywhere. While stopped to get gas, Janay and I whispered about whether or not we should throw them away, considering they'd all been "tasted" and they were going on being 6 days old, but we just couldn't bring ourselves to do it.

So the donuts journeyed on with us to San Francisco. We played a killer show and saw some old friends. We decided to drive the hour and half to Sacramento that night. Janay drove with me sitting shotgun. Mikey had driven 11 hours that day so he napped. We took a turn a little fast on the Bay bridge out of San Fran and the side door flew open. Mikey was on it, quickly secured the door, and laid back down. Once we arrived in Sacramento at nearly 3am, he said "you know, when that door flew open, we lost something. I don't know what it was, but I saw something fly out." We all looked around fearing the worst......that one of our instruments or amps was now laying along side of the road or worse yet, catapulted off the bridge and into the San Francisco bay. We seemed to have everything and then.......I noticed the absence of the Voodoo donut box that had traveled with us at least a good 1,000 miles. "where are the donuts?" I said.....and we stopped for moment. Complete silence, as we all glance around and then erupted into the most delicious round of giggles and laughter we'd had the whole entire trip as we realized that somewhere along the Bay bridge in Frisco our donuts had decided to leave us and knew that if anyone stumbled upon them their epitaph would read, "good things come in pink boxes."

Beginning of the End

So I have designated myself as the official tour driver, except for when I'm drunk. The driver's seat is pretty much the only place I feel comfortable while this thing is moving. I've learned it can be a treacherous thing riding in the RV with no seat belts. Just ask the donuts.

I'm sad that this will be the last night of the tour because every day so far has gotten better.
I've become accustomed to living in the RV with the other three, staying up late and getting up early to drive.

Last night was especially fun because my brother, sister and many of my old friends came out and afterwards involved ourselves in some heavy drinking and table dancing.
I've learned a lot about my fellow bandmates/tour manager over the past week and a half. I'd only spoken to Tim and Janay a handful of times before the tour and now can't imagine life without any of them.
I am excited to be near a good night's sleep in my own room, however, if I could share that room with Astra, Tim and Janay, it would make it even better.

Stuffed and ready to roll

We are on the road to Santa Cruz as I type, well feed, somewhat rested, and winding down our two week adventure. We had an awesome show last night at Fox & Goose. I personally really enjoyed Musical Charis and as it turns out Jessie (featured in picture), the front woman of the band, went to APU with me my freshman year. We also have a close mutual friend-what are the odds! This is a small world.

Still fighting my cold, it sucks but I am having a great time.

Our tour has flown by, but at the same time it feels like ages ago that I did the Costco run to grab food for our journey.

I get to see some old friends from APU at tonight's show! Woot woot! It is still drizzling and cold outside but our spirits are high. We have one last show and then tomorrow will be filled with tending to the RV, getting Betty in tip top shape to return to her rightful owner.

Mixed feelings about getting home tomorrow. I feel like I could do this for way longer than two weeks.

Hip Hip Hooray,
Janay

Yo San Franscisco - Yo Mamma

Watching Yo Momma on MTV at Mikey's parent's house. Pork Roast in the oven, rain outside, a late night behind us...taking it easy 'till we bust to Santa Cruz. Two things are certain, Sacremento provides good food and, Sacremento-nites rock to Astra Kelly. Sold the most CDs last night than any other night. People were coming up during the show saying the merch was priced too low. These people got an appetite, and they're waiting for that full plate. Our set got cut short last night, only played about a 25 minute set, but maybe that is the trick. Tease the audience. Wet the appetite. Let them be full later.

San Francisco was a trip too. They're a rowdy bunch. And being blocks from Haight-Ashbury, you never know who you're gonna meet. My sister broke in her new car and drove 6 hrs on the road to see us play at Kimo's. You guys rock! The opening band was great, they had a bluesy, grassroots sound, funky, John Lee Hooker-ish at times. Hmm....that's all I got for now....yo mamma's getting too good. Anyone wanna play the self-esteem game? Yo Mamma so fat when she sat down on in her new car, the wheels popped!

Dayquil Delight...

Hey there, ho there,
It's true, we are on the back side of tour and things are getting warmer the more south we go. I some how managed to get a cold around Seattle/ Portland and am trying to find refuge from my sniffles and cough in a small bottle of dayquil bought on the road.

Tour encourages you to conduct your daily routine in some very unconventional places. I have brushed my teeth in many a gas stations, even a Walmart, laid my head on several different floors/couches, and did a little eyebrow maintenance in the passenger seat of the RV. We made a rule before we left, "number two at the venue", needless to say we have all "venued" at many random locations along the way- so much so that "venue" has become the new slang for well...you know.

We played at Kimo's in San Francisco last night and had a really good time, there were some great people there including The Last of the Steam Powered Trains and Suburban Slow Death. We hit the road after our gig and headed back to Sacramento to crash at Mikey's family's house again.

Having a slow paced day in Sac, watching TV, sitting by the fire and enjoying the company of Mikey's hospitable family.

Back in Cali

Great show last night at George Fox University. Thanx to Just Lions for hooking it up!
Our place to stay fell thru however, so we hightailed it out of there and took advantage of the all night parking at the local Walmart. Had a little party in the RV and rose early to hit the road for our only other long drive day. The sun is setting now and we're about to hit Sacramento to swing by Mikey's folks place then drive the short hour and half to San Fran. A couple of old friends from highschool will be out tonight and we're sharing the stage with a friend of mine from Chicago. Should be a friendly show.
After freezing our arses off for days I stepped out of the RV in California today and it felt like summer. Ready to rock our last three shows and savor the last of this beautiful adventure.

Reflections

We have summited this tour and are now heading back south. Every city we stopped in on the way up got more and more icy. (Note to self: save cold cities for the summer.)
It's interesting when your touring and playing in a different city every night, there are layers upon layers of experience to tap into. Each stage offers a different energy, each city a different flavor and everything seems sped up like we've taken a quantum leap into the creative realm. I feel completely away from the world and yet more in it at the same time.
The Northwest is as beautiful as I remember it and I reminisced about my days of street performing in Capitol Hill. Last time, I arrived completely busted, spent my last $20 on some fire engine red hair dye and banked a couple hundred while the scent of fresh flowers drifted from the shop on the corner.
I miss this. Once I return to SD, I know my wanderlust will be only mildly appeased. I fantasize about going to Europe, Japan, hitting the coast again in the spring.....something's gotta give though. Savings tapped, nowhere else to borrow dough from, credit cards maxed...the life of a musician is not without great material sacrifice until you reach a certain point. Driven by passion, determination, I cannot give up. I've come this far and the sheer fact there is so much more to do curbs my doubt when it sneaks in and gives me strength when I feel depleted and impatient.
Amazing show in Seattle at The Columbia City theatre. Built in 1919, I could feel the ghosts of shows past whirling around the room as I played. They have a recording studio on site, so I had the set recorded and will take the trax home to mix.
Onto George Fox University now for a show on campus.....luckily another warm place to stay since our generator has been completely unreliable.

xoxoxoxo - Astra

Oh the places you'll go...

We have crashed at some very unique places as of late, in attempts to avoid a chilly slumber in a frosty RV.

Our first night we slept in the same room as a crow out in Portland's countryside, next on Washington's Bainbridge Island in a mod, outdoor education dorm, and then last night in a revamped old high school.

I am amazed at how willing people are to let all four of us stay with them and how hospitable they are. We have been more than taken care of where ever we go.

The Northwest is a gorgeous place and I have found the cold to be very invigorating. Seattle gave me a sense of excitement, perhaps it was the goose bumps I experienced as a result of the low temperatures. It was good to have a day off to rest, we took things slow and ate some good food. Back down to Newburg, OR tonight for a show at George Fox University with our friends Just Lions.

Warm (I wish) Regards,

JP

Fireside slumber

I feel great. Slept next to a big cuddly dog and a warm cozy fire last night. It was wonderful. I got to see some old friends at the show! That is my favorite part of this journey, meeting up with different friends along the way and making new ones where ever we go.

We cut it kind of close getting to the gig, things were a bit rushed as the drive from Sacramento to Portland took longer than expected. Things worked themselves out in the end.

We stayed at my friend Kyle's house.
We spent the morning sipping coffee, listening to Bob Dylan records (swoon!), and getting cleaned up (hooray for another shower).

I went on a walk in the brisk winter air, it was very refreshing. It has been a long time since I have been in weather this cold and at this point I am enjoying it. I encountered many animals and some spectacular views (see facebook for more pictures). I felt very peaceful and inspired in Portland. Life is good, traveling is great.

We just pulled up to the Columbia Seattle Theatre, so for now I must go!

Peace, Love, and Applesauce.

Po-Po-Portland!

Oh baby, drove up to the Oregon border on the longest leg of the journey so far. Janay took the wheel in the morning. Listened to the complete box collection of Led Zepplin tunes on the way up. It makes you tap your toes, which is a good thing when you're running behind on an already long trip. Just lay into the pedal. Good views and good music - and good Lord! Crikey! Po-Po found us again today. We got pulled over on the 5 freeway somewhere south of Redding. I let the cop follow me for a few minutes with his lights flashing. I didn't really want to pull over. And I needed to be absolutely sure he wanted to pull me over too. You can never be too careful. Our license plate, as it turned out, was outside legal height from the bumper. It was too high above the road, and as the po-po explained, is not illuminated for the other drivers. He officially put us behind schedule and as it stands, will be somewhere 45min to an hour behind schedule. Sounds like another routine pull-over, and it gets more complicated every year.

rove

Today was a very snoozey day, thus the lack of picture uploads and blogging. We had a 9-10 hour drive that faced us this morning after a very late, but good night at Old Ironsides.

The tour really picked up speed last night as we shared the bill with 3 other acts, two Sacramento bands (Tough Luxury & Black Tar Caviar) and one from Long Beach (Repeater). It was a night of cool tunes and a cheerful, supportive and sometimes dance-tastic crowd.
We stayed with Mikey's family last night and they treated us like royalty. We were fed SO incredibly well. They all came out to the show, it was their first time seeing Mikey play bass. He did awesome as did Astra and Tim. We were finally able to see a glimpse of another thriving music community. The other bands were in awe of Timmy's cajon.

I drove the RV for the first time last night, not to shabby if I do say so myself. I took the morning shift as well and the scenery was beautiful. We just had an awesome pot roast dinner that we pre-cooked at Mikey's house. Our belly's are full, we are somewhat well rested (yeah right) and ready to rock Portland. Lots of friends coming out to the show tonight including my old roomie from college Tracy, our hair dresser friends Becky and Sydney, and my family friend Kyle!

Astra Kelly 500

Did the drive today from SLO to Sac in hurried fashion. It's sad when you are the one weaving through traffic in an RV because apparently it was National Everyone Drive Slow Day today. There were a few exciting moments but nothing worth remembering this long. Just got out of the shower at my mom's and very full from all the choice foods that were readily available when we showed up. It makes me happy inside...

Ahoy Matey!

"Something is happening here, But you don't know what it is, Do you Mr. Jones?" -Bob Dylan

Santa Barbara was a dream, and it put me into a dreamy mood. They say it's America's only European city. And judging by the quality of the people, the richness of the food, the charming, adobe structures, it seemed like a sure bet. We rocked a good set and met a guru in the music industry who's collaborated with big names like Madonna and has sold some somewhere in the vicinity of 2 million records. He was a cool chap! I like the guy - I hope he likes our CD too. It's the blind leading the blind in this industry, until you learn well enough how to do it, and then once you learn how, you then just have to make sure you do it better than the next person, and then keep doing it or be swallowed up by the tide - which is exactly where we found ourselves.

Later that night, we sat under the full moon, looking out the capsized remains of a sailboat, helm's deep in the sand. It was majestic. I am about to state my personal credo here for the first time, but merely to affirm, my belief that man is an individual and independent entity. That we are seekers and journeyers on the cusp of an immediate inception of our dreams, however big or small. That's too deep, much to deep for this quickly changing scenery outside the window. But you see what I mean, I can't help it, Santa Barbara put me into a dreamy mood.
-Timmy D.

SB and SLO

Great peeps at The Live Culture Lounge in Santa Barbara. Anthony made us an amazing dinner and we shared a Bohemian Rhapsody moment after being sufficiently fed and watered. By the time we were about to hit the stage, the place was packed out. The stage was built up above everything and I kept having weird flashes while playing that it was just going to go crashing down....but it held firm of course and after some good chill time with our new SB friends, we were escorted to the beautiful Butterfly beach. In the wee morning hours we sat listening to the waves, talking about life and wondered about the story behind the capsized sailboat that had washed up on the shore. Just as we were about to get cozy in the RV.......weeeooooooo, weeeeeooooooo...po po showed up shining his big ole bright light. "Technically" you're not supposed to park over night by the beach there between 2am-5am. The nice young officer asked what we were doing and if we knew we weren't supposed to be parked there, to which I replied "yes." Then he asked what our plan was, I simply said, "well, I was sort of betting on you NOT showing up." Since we'd been drinking some two buck chuck and he could see that, he ended up just letting us stay and told us to be quiet...didn't even give us a ticket. I gave him a CD even though he said he was more of country fan.
Next morning Mikey cooked up a brilliantly delicious breakfast, a woman in a mini van ran into the RV....no damage thankfully. Took a walk on the beach and made our way to San Luis Obispo. Arrived downtown for bike night/critical mass....so awesome. Tons of folks riding in PJ's. One girl in a pink angel outfit and a dude pulling a trailer with a keg in it.
Decent gig, we played awesome, though most folks were too busy getting sauced to care too much about the music. We did fish a few new fans out of the murky waters though and actually made enough at the gig to pay for a tank of gas. Woo hoo!
Janay and I both got hugged and licked (not in THAT way) by a crazy drunk Aussie and we made our way thru the fog to find a parking spot for the night.
Now on our way to Sacramento. I'm excited for this show. Mikey's got a ton of family here. Mom's making Posole tonight and perhaps we might all get real showers....fingers crossed.
'til tomorrow, xoxoxo - Astra

Socks make a world of difference

This has been a pretty easy trip so far. When thinking about coming on this tour I pictured all of us "roughing it". In my opinion, this has not been the case for us. Although we have had to be a little more creative in how we go about our daily routine, overall we are very comfortable.

We took showers yesterday at an RV park and all of us felt super refreshed! What a difference a shower makes, and believe me we all were in need of a shower. I had to admit that it was the first time in my life I had to pay to shower. I feel like people should have PAID ME to shower.

I'll be honest (the beauty of blogs) I didn't really dig SLO all that much. Watching the drunken antics of the college kids just kind of put a bad taste in my mouth about SLO. I'm bummed too because I had high hopes for the town. The people there were very hospitable though, we were offered three different places to crash for the night.

I learned Texas hold 'em last night and got my butt whooped. Love me some good humus and pita chips. Slept with socks on and it made a world of difference in warmth, everyday is chillier and chillier. Sacramento here we come!

Like a rolling stone...

Last night was a great show. The Live Culture Lounge was a really cool place and I would highly recommend other bands/musicians make this a tour stop priority. The owners are great people, food was scrumptious, and wine and frozen yogurt were a flowin'-yep that's right frozen yogurt.

The stage was really cool too, elevated above the restaurant crowd reminiscent of a Romeo & Juliet romantic balcony scene. Astra and the guys once again wooed their audience.

After the show we found prime beach front parking and settled in for the night. We sat out watching the crashing waves, sipping our glasses of two buck chuck under the light of full moon. It was a majestic scene with oil platforms glowing offshore and an eerie beached sailboat lodged in the sand in front of us.

I curled up in bed earlier than the rest and fell asleep listening to the rhythmic sounds of the ocean less than 30 yards from the RV. I find myself trying to savor every moment of this unique trip. Incredible.

Our morning was slow paced. Mikey made an awesome spicy breakfast of eggs and potatoes. Hung out by the beach a bit this afternoon. Love me some Santa Barbara. Now off to find showers and figure out how to dump the RV "ish".

Hey Nay Nay, Hey Nay Nay...Objects may have shifted during flight

Yesterday was a crazy long day but very fun. Spent most of the day running errands, taking care of last minute details. We are mastering a highly evolved game of tetris. Lots of strategically placing gear and supplies and then replacing them after the jostling of the RV shuffles everything around. I am certain we will all develop our "RV legs" soon.

The show last night was electric, Astra's vocals were spot on and both boys were groovin'. It was followed by silly times in the RV, a glorified slumber party that will last 11 days. Fun to wake up on Sunset in a random parking lot.

I am happy to get past LA. We've been there, done that. Now, moving on to the unknown- where adventure is sure to happen.

Just got off the phone with Chad, booking agent from Live Culture Lounge. He seems rad and very willing to accommodate. We are just arriving in Santa Barbara now, set to park at the beach for a while and get organized and cleaned up. It's a strange feeling to have a "schedule" so to speak but TONS of free time to play and explore.

Cheers!

JP

Shaking and Baking

We're hitting the road with steel-toed boots. Loaded up the Mallard with all the gear and good karma we could squeeze into it. Had time for sandwiches and a quick stop at the Border Patrol checkpoint on the 5N. All the cars were flagged through. We got palmed by the patrol officer and had to stop and answer a few questions about our prerogative wander lusting. It's as they say, if the RV's a rocking, don't come a knocking. But I guess maybe they are the exception. Actually, everyone who comes a knockin on this trip will probably be the exception. Because as it turns out, this RV is a rocker. I'm pretty sure there was an earthquake that came rip roaring through the cabin last night that scattered our gear, swallowed my 9V adaptor, and put a leak into some bottom dwelling gasket on the engine. Yep, so the Mallard rocks as well as leaks. Oh, and the generator engine also stalls. But the sign by the door reminds me "Home is Where the Heart Is" and right now, I couldn't imagine being in any better place.

Day 2

Pillow talk from the RV:
Janay: Mikey...how do you feel about a three hole punch?
Mikey: I luv it. Three's a prime number. Next question.
Everyone: Hahahahaha.

Great show in LA. Saw some old friends and made a few new ones. After paying off the parking attendant in the lot behind the Whiskey A Go Go, settling the bar tab, and making no dough, I'm bettin' that was the most expensive gig we'll have...or at least I hope. Onto Santa Barbara for an early show at Live Culture Lounge, a sweet dinner on the house and some good wine. :)

Nugget from Nay Nay

I can't believe tour is finally here. Everything sort of feels surreal at this point, I don't think it will actually hit me until we take off in the pink-stripped RV (Pictures/video coming soon).

Things have come together in a nice little bow. For a while during the planning process we weren't sure if I was even going to be able to go on tour because of my job hunting situation; however, I am happy to say that I found a job that starts exactly right after we arrive home from our tour! This trip is my last little stint of freedom before discovering a different side of San Diego, the work force.

I'm really looking forward to the adventures we will encounter and all the people we will meet along the way. Since my senior year of college, touring has been a bucket list fascination of mine. I never thought I would actually be able to cross it off so soon. It's crazy to think about how long we have been working to put this thing together-since September. I'm happy we have finally arrived at departure. I'm excited to see what inspiration this trip stirs in all of us.

That's it for now! Last night to sleep in my comfy bed. More to come soon.....
